After premiering in August 2022, Netflix waited a few months before officially renewing The Sandman for more episodes in November 2022. Since then, things have been quiet in terms of news. No casting announcements have been made, nor do we know how many episodes there will be in the new season. But now we are one step closer: filming in The Sandman Season 2 is on!
The entire main cast is expected to return for the new episodes, including Dream (Tom Sturridge), Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie), Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong), etc. We previously reported that four new characters will be introduced to the series: Delirium, Destiny, Destruction, and Wanda. Netflix has yet to announce who has been cast in these roles.
Sandman Filming Update: What We Know
The new season began filming on Monday June 26 at Shepperton Studios, the same studio where most of the first season was filmed. Taking to Twitter, Barry Waldo, husband of production designer Jon Gary Steele, revealed that the team returned to work on the second season on Monday, June 25. «We started filming yesterday, so there’s a long way to go!» he wrote he, responding to a fan asking about the progress of the second season.

Additionally, more film evidence suggests that the shooting is currently taking place at Durdle Door in Dorset, England. While the report dorsetlive doesn’t mention Sandman specifically, it’s safe to assume the location’s two-day closure is due to Sandman filming, especially since it falls in a place that makes sense to Sandman. Of Far from the madding crowd to doctor who, the location is frequently used for productions.
An image of the production at Durdle Door also recently surfaced online. In typical style, it’s pretty blurry and hard to make out what’s going on. But they all wear black, which is very Sandman-as. And there are scenes in the comic that this place would be perfect for. What are we thinking? The images come from a Instagram account by the name of The Wondering Twitswho stumbled upon the production.

We’ve reached out to Netflix for comment on the start of filming, but have yet to hear back.
How has the WGA Writers Strike affected The Sandman season 2?
The ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike across Hollywood has meant that the pause button has been hit on numerous productions. Writers are looking for bigger writers rooms, better job security, and more funding. They also protest against the use of artificial intelligence in productions. Sandman creator Neil Gaiman has also been very vocal about the strike.

as for Sandman, it looks like shooting will begin without any active writers on set. According to the show’s comic book writer and executive producer Neil Gaiman, the scripts for the new episodes were shipped and frozen in late May, allowing filming to proceed as scheduled. Addressing a fan in tumblrGaiman admitted that the strike will have a negative effect on all of his upcoming shows:
“Absolutely, it will have a negative effect on the promotion and success of Good Omens, just like it will have a negative effect on Anansi Boys (which just went to “image lock” on all six episodes without me signing off on edits) and about Sandman (which will be shot without anyone rewriting the scripts, which were frozen as of May 31). But it’s worth it.|
As always, solidarity with the striking writers and we hope they get the result they deserve. Hopefully, the situation will be resolved in time for Gaiman and the writing team to get back to work on Sandman. Production of new episodes The Sandman It has been divided into two segments. The first one starts in June 2023 and ends in October 2023. And then the shooting will continue from January 2024 to April 2024.
What can we expect from The Sandman season 2?
Casting news for upcoming episodes indicates that the show will remix the structure of the comics. The season will cover Volume 4, Season of Mists and Volume 7, Brief Lives. Interestingly, the casting descriptions suggest that Volume 5, A Game of Yours, has been shelved, at least for now. they expected orpheus song will also be adapted, and while Destruction makes a brief appearance in that, his main story for the season will be covered in short lives.
Wanda’s character will have a different role. In the comics, she appears in the a game of you narrative arc. However, based on her character description, she will be replacing Ruby DeLonge’s character from the comics. She expect appearances from fan favorites Destiny and Delirium as well.
At the moment, The Sandman The second season does not have a release date. Since its filming is scheduled for June 2022, it is likely that it will hit the screens sometime in 2024.
