Netflix has partnered with renowned filmmaker Wes Anderson to produce The wonderful story of Henry Sugar film based on several short stories by Roald Dahl, including The Wonderful story of Henry Sugar. The short film will have a star-studded cast with Benedict Cumberbatch, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, and Dev Patel headlining the cast.
The film is written and will be directed by the seven-time Oscar nominee. wesanderson, who recently launched The French office.
The wonderful story of Henry Sugar will be Anderson’s second adaptation of Dahl’s work after the 2009 film Fantastic Mr. Fox. It will also notably be the director’s first movie for a streaming service.
Anderson is producing the film under his American Empirical Pictures banner. Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson serve as producers, with Octavia Peissel, John Peet and Alice Dawson serving as co-producers.

Anderson’s frequent collaborator, Roberto D. Yeomanwill act as the project’s director of photography, while Kasia Walicka-Maimone appears as the costume designer.
The wonderful story of Henry Sugar is Dahl’s first major Netflix-exclusive feature film after the streamer acquisition of Ronald Dahl Story Company in fall 2021, obtaining the adaptation rights of the entire catalog of the author. However, it’s worth noting that the film was first picked up before Netflix acquired the library.

When The wonderful story of Henry Sugar release?
Netflix has not set an exact release date for The wonderful story of Henry Sugarbut we do know that it will be released in 2023. Its 2023 release window came along with the Netflix movie slate reveal in January 2023.
Before its Netflix release date, the film will be premiere at the Venice Film Festival (between August 30 and September 9) as an entry out of competition.

anderson talking to indiewireAsked about the upcoming Netflix movie, he explained that it’s «not a feature film,» adding that «it’s like 37 minutes or something.»
It has since been confirmed that the short will have a total duration of 39 minutes.
Continuing on why he chose to make the short film on Netflix and comparing the title to his 2007 Apple short Hotel Chevalier, Anderson continued: «Because it’s a 37-minute movie, [Netflix] it was the perfect place to do it because it’s not really a movie. You know they used to do these BBC things called «Play for Today» run by people like Steven Frears and John Schlesinger and Alan Clarke. They were programs of one hour or even less. I imagined something like that.»

As mentioned above, the film will be based on Ronald Dahl’s collection of short stories, The wonderful story of Henry Sugar and six morefirst published in 1982. As the title suggests, there are seven short stories in it.
According to Netflix’s official description of the film, Anderson’s adaptation will delve into many of these stories:

The main story centers on Henry Sugar, a man who steals a book that shows him how to see through objects and predict the future. This touches on a series of misadventures that involve evading mob henchmen, working with a Hollywood makeup artist to create new identities, and establishing orphanages around the world.
another is The Boy Who Talked to Animals – in which a stranded sea turtle and a little boy have more in common than meets the eye. the hitchhiker proves that a professional pickpocket can be the perfect friend in a pinch. The Mildenhall Treasure – a true story of fortune found and an opportunity missed. The Cisne is a short story about the boys Ernie and his friend Raymond, who like to bully Peter Watson.
Two more stories Stroke of luck and A piece of the cake, they are nonfiction and tell about two different parts of the life of author Ronald Dahl.

Among the first batch of casting announcements for the film included Benedict Cumberbatch, who will lead The wonderful story of Henry Sugar for netflix. He will play the titular Henry Sugar, as well as a few other characters, thus acting as a link between himself and other short stories throughout the film. Cumberbatch’s recent work includes Netflix dog power and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Cumberbatch will be joined on this project by Developer Patel, Ralph Fiennes, and Sir Ben Kingsley. Patel can be seen in the acclaimed 2021 film the green knight and the next Netflix Monkey Manwhile Fiennes’ recent works include Daniel Craig’s last appearance as James Bond no time to die and the king prequel called The king’s man. Oscar winner Kingsley can be seen at Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
