Netflix has acquired Nimona, a long-developed adaptation of ND Stevenson’s best-selling graphic novel. The project was in development at 20th Century Fox and then Disney before being canceled and eventually revived on Netflix, ultimately set to release in summer 2023.

History of NimonaDevelopment of
Until it’s the creation of Netflix, Nimona has had a checkered production history, having previously been developed for Fox and then Disney from 2015. The project was originally produced by Blue Sky Studios, a part of the animation division of then-20th Century Fox.
It was initially targeted for a 2020 version which was later moved to a 2022 version. Production was already underway when Disney acquired Fox, and in February 2021 it was announced that Disney, which already has Pixar and Walt Disney Animation, will blue sky shutter.
That led to much speculation about the future of Nimona, and at the time, employees working on the project said the film «will probably never see the light of day.» Soon after, the news came that the production in Nimona it would stop and the film would not be released.
There had been rumors of a Nimona resurrection for months, and in early February 2022, Netflix filed a copyright application for the word «Nimona.»
Then a month later Nimona it was announced that it had landed on Netflix, and production on the film was restarted in early 2022, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Reacting to the news that Netflix has picked up the film, ND Stevenson said on Twitter:
“Nimona has always been a brave little story that just wouldn’t stop. She’s a fighter… but she also has some amazing people fighting for her. I am very excited to announce that THE NIMONA MOVIE IS ALIVE… coming to you in 2023 from Annapurna and Netflix.»

As mentioned above, Nimona is an adaptation of the best-selling graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson, which was published as a webcomic in 2012 and finally released as a graphic novel book in 2015. Here’s the official synopsis for the graphic novel:
“Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a gift for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As a sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: to prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his friends at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroism are not the heroes everyone thinks they are.
But as small acts of mischief escalate into a fierce battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona’s powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And the wild and unpredictable side of her could be more dangerous than he’s willing to admit.»

With the release of the official teaser and poster, we can confirm that Nimona will premiere on Netflix on Friday, June 30, 2023!
Moviegoers lucky enough to attend the 2023 Annecy Festival in June 2023 can watch Nimona before everyone else, with his world debut taking place there.
