The sports world has embraced betting as several US states legalized the practice, raising questions about Pete Rose’s eligibility for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Rose was barred from enshrinement in Cooperstown after it was revealed that he bet on games while player-manager of the Cincinnati Reds. He admitted as much in 2004, but with sports betting rampant in MLB stadiums, the possibility of reversing Rose’s ban has been up for debate.

The king of all-time hits got the endorsement of Hall of Famer Rod Carew.

«It has gone too far and is hypocritical,» Carew said in a tweet in response to the sports betting. «How can you keep Pete Rose out and have a sportsbook at Reds Stadium?»

The Reds are set to open an MGM sportsbook at the Great American Ballpark in 2023. Ohio legalized sports betting earlier in the year.

«If they can embrace the game to the level of putting it in the stadium, they can forgive Pete and recognize him for how great he is. That’s the point,» Carew added in a separate tweet.

Rose bet the Reds would win the 2023 World Series as Ohio celebrated the opening of legalized sports betting in the state.

Rose, a one-time MVP award winner, holds the MLB record for most career hits (4,256), which he accumulated during his 24-year major league career.

Nicknamed «Charlie Hustle» for his fierce style of play, Rose spent the majority of his career (19 years) playing for the Reds, with stops along the way for the Philadelphia Phillies and Montreal Expos.

Rose also holds the all-time MLB records for games played (3,562), plate appearances (15,890), and at-bats (14,053).
