Last year, a potential project in the works at Netflix with Spike Jonze at the helm was revealed. Now, a year later, we’ve heard a few smaller bits of news about the project and the fact that Joaquin Phoenix is currently in his sights for the lead role.

“Spike Jonze, one of my favorite filmmakers, is quietly working on a lavish series on Netflix that hasn’t been announced yet, but has a writers room and a big, expensive canvas.”

Jonze is a prolific filmmaker who, if you can believe it, only has four feature directing credits in his 24 years as a filmmaker. Those movies are His, Where the monsters live, Adaptation. and his first feature, Being John Malkovich. He has also directed several documentaries, including most recently, the 2020 Apple TV+ documentary, The history of the Beastie Boys.

We are hearing that the project will be a limited series and the genre will be science fiction. Jonze is engaged in both directing and writing the project, which has been described as expansive and noted that it could be on its way to becoming one of the most expensive shows in Netflix history.

Joaquin Phoenix, the Oscar-winning actor, is currently being considered and has an offer for the lead role in a new project. If he accepts, this would lead to a reunion with director Spike Jonze, with whom Phoenix previously collaborated on the acclaimed film, His.

Spike Jonze is also considering another project on Netflix. We hear that the filmmaker is also developing an animated series.

We’ll no doubt be hearing more about this project from Spike Jonze in the coming months and years, so stay tuned.
