Vice President Kamala Harris, unfortunately, witnessed her alma mater, Howard University, lose to Kansas, the NCAA men’s basketball national champion, on Thursday 96-68.

Howard and Kansas played at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa, and when Harris appeared on the video board, he received an icy reception. According to multiple reports, the boos outweighed the cheers of the fans.

After the game, the vice president had a chance to give the downtrodden Bison players a pep talk in their locker room after their loss.

«You played hard. You played down to the last second. You did all of us Bisons proud,» he said. «You’re smart. You’re disciplined. You put everything you had into the game. You didn’t stop, and that’s very inspiring. So you keep playing with your chin up and your shoulders back because you showed the world who Bison is.

Harris’ speech, however, didn’t really resonate with the rest of social media.

Howard was making his third NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament appearance in program history. It was the second time the team had been selected as a No. 16 seed. The Bison were a No. 12 seed in 1981.

This season, Howard’s coach, Kenneth Blakeney, led the team to a 22-12 mark, his best mark thus far as head coach. It was just three years ago when Howard only had four wins.
