At least three children were killed after gunshots erupted at a Tennessee Christian school on Monday, authorities said, adding that the gunman was killed by police.

The «active shooter» incident unfolded at The Covenant School on Burton Hills Boulevard in Nashville when officers «attacked» the shooter, police said.

Three «pediatric patients were transported to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital in Vanderbilt, all with gunshot wounds,» Vanderbilt University Medical Center spokesman John Howser said. «All three were pronounced dead upon arrival.»

Shortly after police announced the shooter was dead, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation also said that «there is currently no threat to public safety.»

Students from the school, which serves preschool through sixth grade students, were being bussed to Woodmont Baptist Church, two miles from campus, to meet their parents.

The campus employs 33 teachers with a student to instructor ratio of 8 to 1, according to the Covenant School.
