Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders didn’t mince words when he laid out his expectations for his players when they spend time away from the team.

Sanders successfully built a winning culture at Jackson State and looks to replicate it in Boulder. The Pro Football Hall of Famer immediately began laying the groundwork after he was named Colorado’s new head coach in December.

The student-athletes are ready for a break, but Sanders warned the players not to let time slip by so they forget the rules they must follow once they return to campus.

«You have a meeting [Monday morning]. If you’re late for that meeting, there will be consequences. Your locker will be cleared. It will clean up and I’m not threatening you. It’s just reality,» Sanders told the players about him.

From there, he highlighted the importance of the players being attentive to their surroundings during the break.

«Friends, be careful in your rest. Be careful with your comings and goings. Not everyone is for you, not everyone is with you, not everyone wants you, doesn’t appreciate you, doesn’t want you to be that guy you plan to be, and you life has value.

He also encouraged the players to remember how valuable they are.

«Your life is essential. You are someone. You are important. So please be careful. We don’t want to wear black and go to a funeral. We want to wear black and go out and scream.» someone,» she said passionately.

Sanders guided the Jackson State Tigers to back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and an undefeated 2022 regular season before losing in the Celebration Bowl.

Colorado is coming off a dismal 1-11 season. Sanders hopes to make the Buffaloes a contender in the Pac-12 conference. Setting the tone seems to be the first part of his teamwork philosophy.
