The Ole Miss Rebels and the Miss Golden Eagles of the South played Tuesday night at Trustmark Park, home of the Mississippi Braves, the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ole Miss pitcher Brayden Jones tripped while trying to reach for a baseball after a bunt attempt by Miss South.

The crew chief met with both head coaches, where the decision was made to cancel the game.

«Tuesday night’s baseball game between Ole Miss and Southern Miss at Trustmark Park was called in the bottom of the fourth due to unplayable turf conditions,» Ole Miss baseball said on its website.

«The referees called off the game for the safety of the players after several instances of turf reinstating during the game.»

According to the Twitter account of the Mississippi Bravesthe infield playing surface was replaced effective March 14.

The game will not be picked up due to scheduling conflicts with both schools.

«It’s the right thing to do,» Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said, according to the Mississippi Clarion Ledger. «It’s disappointing, obviously, for both teams to get here, get so into the game, have so many fans here and not play. So, obviously, there’s a lot of disappointment for everyone. But at the end of the day, it’s the right thing to do. Nobody wants to losing a player in the middle of the season due to poor field conditions».

The Golden Eagles were leading 2-1 when the game was called, but because the contest did not go to five innings, the game resulted in a no contest.

«It’s a bummer. Both teams were really competing tonight.» Southern Miss head coach Scott Berry said of the course conditions, according to WLBT 3. «It was pretty apparent that this could get worse…and we both have a lot of season, and we certainly don’t need to hurt anybody because of it.» «
