Bryson DeChambeau is known for breaking golf balls, but one connected with another golfer at the 2023 PGA Championship while attempting to tee off during the first round on Thursday.

PGA golf professional Kenny Pigman, who qualified for the tournament this week for the second time, was preparing for his tee shot on the 18th hole when he heard someone yell «fore» on the adjacent 17th hole. As he ducked for cover, ESPN’s broadcast of the tournament at Oak Hill in Rochester, New York, caught Pigman being hit with a golf ball.

Pigman was hit in the back, and didn’t seem too hurt by the errant shot.

It turned out that it was DeChambeau trying to get to the tricky 17th green in two shots, and his shot went too far to the right.

DeChambeau ended up walking over to Pigman to make sure everything was okay, while apologizing for hitting him. He would go on to bogey the 17th, scoring a five on the par-four hole.

But DeChambeau, who plays on the controversial LIV Golf Tour, birdied the 18th hole to finish his first nine holes (many players started on the 10th hole Thursday), one low at 34.

The true front nine was where DeChambeau began to heat up, allowing him to enter the clubhouse with a four-under-par lead after shooting 66. He birdied the first, fourth and sixth holes for his total of six in the day.

DeChambeau won eight times on the PGA Tour before moving to LIV Golf. One of those wins was a major: the 2020 US Open.

His best PGA Championship finish came later that year, finishing in a tie for fourth at TPC Harding Park.

DeChambeau is hitting the ball better than most on the field right now, and aside from the shot that hit Pigman, he’s set up to have a solid week heading into his second round on Friday.
