Four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers has had a lengthy divorce with the Packers. But the drama between the quarterback and the team may have been worse than it seemed.

The Packers selected quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 draft.

Sometime before the 2021 draft, Rogers’ agent, David Dunn, contacted the Packers to request that they either trade his client or have the team fire general manager Brian Gutekunst, according to a report by The Athletic.

Dunn could not be reached for comment, and Rodgers declined to discuss the situation during his conversation with The Athletic.

Last month, Green Bay traded Rodgers to the Jets in exchange for multiple draft picks.

The tension between Rodgers and the Packers was palpable in 2021, with the quarterback publicly pushing the front office to change the team’s overall culture.

Rodgers was named the league’s most valuable player in 2021 and was later rewarded with a massive three-year, $150 million contract extension. But the contract wasn’t enough for Rodgers to attend the team’s volunteer OTAs.

The Packers’ decision makers were not «satisfied with Rodgers’ commitment and effort» after he signed the extension, according to The Athletic’s report.

«When I’m inside, I’m all-in, and you want to ride with offseason workouts?» Rodgers told The Athletic. «I won MVP without doing offseason workouts. Was my commitment less back then? I would say not at all. The way I come back to work, not just physically fit but mentally refreshed, is the best way to have the season he wanted to have during the Green Bay ones.

«I think it’s just a written evasion to try to find something to put me down on that, honestly. When you know what offseason training is really about, it’s completely ridiculous.»

Several months ago, Rodgers was supposed to have a face-to-face meeting with Gutekunst in California. Rodgers claims that a date or time for a meeting was never set.

Rodgers again cited limited cell coverage at his Southern California home in response to Gutekunst’s statement that he tried to contact the quarterback «many times» during the offseason.

«I have zero or a bar in the house, so call me, sometimes it happens, most of the time it falls and doesn’t happen,» Rodgers told The Athletic. «Everyone who knows me, when I’m out west, knows that’s the way to contact me.»

The 39-year-old signal caller added that he tried to contact Gutekunst before entering his obscurity retreat. He also acknowledged that Gutekunst sometimes sent him text messages and he returned those messages.

«Brian texted me more than I texted him? Yeah, but did I ghost him? No,» Rodgers said. «I texted him. There was back and forth we had, so this is the story you want to go with? You’re going to stand on this hill of austerity and say that in the conversation of possibly the greatest player in your franchise history, Are you going to say that I couldn’t locate him and that’s why we had to move on?»
